Nordic Nature-Troll Pendant, 25 x 48 mm, 925 Antique Silver plated, two-faced design

A key is not just a simple object that opens and closes doors, it has a great symbolic power. Especially in earlier times, it was a powerful symbol and an object that was partly richly decorated and particularly valuable.

The symbolism of the key is manifold. Once, for example, it was seen as a sign of silence. At weddings of ancient Greek temples, he was painted on the threshold of Adyton, the main room of the temple. There he was supposed to remind of the duty of silence when entering and also symbolize access to mysteries. The latter remained inaccessible to many "normal" people in these times and therefore so particularly seductive.

Not quite as mysterious, but quite powerful was the handing over of the key. It used to be a symbol of the successful conquering, such as the taking of a city, a household or even heaven, as in the Old Testament by Peter.

The handle of the key is referred to as "räute" or "riding" (or "reide"). In earlier times it was richly decorated, elegantly shaped or decorated with other elements. Thus the key itself became a valuable object, which one was just as happy to close away as it was shown.

Today, keys are more functional than decorative. But they sparkle as pendants on necklaces or as charms on bracelets, whether painted gold, silver or colorfully. The key itself is also adorned. We wear it with others on an often thick waistband. The crowning highlight is a key fob. It is a popular gift and shows itself in almost limitless form.

The key has also taken on many functions, for example in music as a note key or in the film as a key scene. Even in the human body it plays a fundamental role, such as as a collarway.
